Pregnancy tests that you can take at home are one of the most sensible purchases you will ever make. Not only are they quite economical, but they will give you a piece of mind that you just can't put a price on. Pregnancy tests are always available at your nearest Pregnancy Center. These tests are true first urine tests. These are looking for the human hormone that is generated by pregnancy.
These tests are preferably performed early in the morning with your "first urine" of the morning. Pregnancy can be detected as early as 10 days past conception with a concentrated urine sample.
These test kits for the detection of HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in serum or urine specimens. This test kit is used to obtain a visual, qualitative result for early detection of pregnancy. More importantly, the more options you have that are available to you, especially if the pregnancy is not a planned one,
1. Free Pregnancy Testing
It is believed by many that young girls should have access to free pregnancy testing options. If they have had unprotected sex, then speaking to a school councilor or youth leader will help to locate the nearest free testing facility or womens centre. Some highschools even carry these testing kits in the nurses office.
2. The Concequences Are Not Worth It
Many young girls feel embarrassed about seeking help, or afraid that their parents will find out. In this case they need to ask the people about confidentiality issues prior to telling them what it is they need. In the event that the girl is in fact pregnant then she should be given the opportunity to tell her parents on her own. There are, of course, some exceptions to this rule. For example, if the girl becomes an immediate danger to herself or others after finding out the results of the tests - perhaps becoming suicidal - then there is just cause for a counsellor to contact the parents or other experts regarding everything.
Later Signs of Teen Pregnancy
As a pregnancy progresses, the signs and symptoms become more pronounced and harder for teens to miss. Some of these pregnancy signs include:
* an enlargement of the abdomen * weight gain or loss * aches such as backaches or headaches * quickening (feeling of fetal movement)
Unplanned Pregnancy
It is likely that the pregnancy is an unplanned one (due to your age), and is common to feel shocked, scared, panicked, confused, embarrassed, isolated or lonely. Parents, boyfriend and professionals are all there to help support and give you advice/information on the options available to you, but only you can make the choice to continue with the pregnancy or not. Its a decision that should be made based on what YOU want to do and not what others think you should do.

Pandemic H1N1 2009 (swine flu) and pregnancy Abstract: H1N1 pandemic influenza is a novel strain of the influenza A virus. It is widely known as swine flu. Most people affected by the virus, including pregnant women, suffer a mild viral illness, and make a full recovery. The median duration of illness is around seven days. This influenza typically affects the younger age group i.e. from the ages of 5?65 years but the age groups of below 5 years and above 65 are particularly prone to severe complications. Pregnant women, because of their altered immunity and physiological adaptations, are at higher risk of developing pulmonary complications, especially in the third trimester. Antiviral drugs are effective against the virus and are not contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Vaccines have now been developed and are offered to... Cardiovascular disease in pregnancy Abstract: Cardiac disease continues to be an important cause of maternal morbidity and mortality and is now the leading cause of maternal deaths in the United Kingdom. This is largely because of extensive haemodynamic changes which occur during pregnancy, namely the increase in blood volume, fluctuations in cardiac output, fall in systemic vascular resistance and hypercoagulable state. High risk periods include the end of the second trimester, during labour and the immediate postpartum period. Prognosis depends on the specific cardiac condition, the patient's functional class, presence of cyanosis, prior history of cardiac events or arrhythmia and the degree of systolic dysfunction. Conditions where pregnancy should be include Eisenmenger's syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, complex cyanoti... Domestic violence Abstract: One incident of domestic violence is reported to the police every minute and up to 30% of domestic abuse starts during pregnancy. However domestic violence remains a subject that health professionals find difficult to discuss.Patients in violent relationships may present in a wide variety of ways including a disastrous obstetric history with repeated miscarriages, stillbirth or pre-term labour. If a woman discloses abuse, put her at ease so she talks about her experiences. Support and reassure her and be non-judgmental. Concentrate on her safety and that of her children. Never advise her to leave her partner as this may be more dangerous than staying. Give her information about relevant agencies (see DOH handbook). If there is any doubt about the safety of her children, contact Ch... Pregnancy restores the regenerative capacity of the aged liver via activation of an mTORC1-controlled hyperplasia/hypertrophy switch [Research Communications] Regenerative capacity is progressively lost with age. Here we show that pregnancy markedly improved liver regeneration in aged mice concomitantly with inducing a switch from proliferation-based liver regeneration to a regenerative process mediated by cell growth. We found that the key mediator of this switch was the Akt/mTORC1 pathway; its inhibition blocked hypertrophy, while increasing proliferation. Moreover, pharmacological activation of this pathway sufficed to induce the hypertrophy module, mimicking pregnancy. This treatment dramatically improved hepatic regenerative capacity and survival of old mice. Thus, cell growth-mediated mass reconstitution, which is relatively resistant to the detrimental effects of aging, is employed in a physiological situation and holds potential as a the... Using the new UK-WHO growth charts (Source: BMJ Online First) Management of hyperglycaemia in the preterm infant In the fetus, the predominant energy supply is glucose transported across the placenta from the mother. As pregnancy progresses, the amount of glucose transported increases, with glycogen and fat stores being laid down, principally in the third trimester. In the well-term baby, there is hormonal and metabolic adaptation in the perinatal period to ensure adequate fuel supply to the brain and other vital organs after delivery, but in the preterm infant, abnormalities of glucose homeostasis are common. After initial hypoglycaemia, due to limited glycogen and fat stores, preterm babies often become hyperglycaemic because of a combination of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. Hyperglycaemia is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in preterm infants, but what should...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

Antenatal corticosteroids and neonatal outcomes according to gestational age: a cohort study Conclusions

Insight into potential biological

Background. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) may be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery and breast-feeding. Transmission can be prevented, and efficient methods have caused vertical transmission to become rare in Europe and the USA. The article discusses the global HIV epidemic among children and challenges in reducing transmission from HIV-positive mothers. Material and methods. The article is based on literature retrieved through a non-systematic search in Medline and experience from working as a paediatrician in Botswana. Results. HIV transmission from mother to child can be reduced from about 30 % to 4 % with relatively simple measures. Anticoagulation for Mechanical Heart Valves in Patients with and without Atrial Fibrillation Abstract Surgical replacement of a native valve with a biological or mechanical prosthesis is the definitive treatment for many forms
of advanced valvular heart disease. Mechanical heart valves are less prone to structural deterioration compared with bioprostheses,
but require chronic oral anticoagulation to prevent thromboembolic events. Thromboembolic risk varies based on patient-related
risk factors, including atrial fibrillation, advanced age, low ejection fraction, and hypercoagulability. Other important
correlates of high thromboembolic risk include valve design, valve position, anticoagulation variability, and time from surgery.
Clinical management is further complicated when antithrombotics may need to be interrupted or altered during surgery or pregnancy.

Known mutations and novel SNPs in the factor V gene were identified in the study cohort determined to have APCR in pregnancy. Further studies are required to investigate the contribution of these novel SNPs to the APCR phenotype. Adverse outcomes including early pregnancy loss (EPL), preeclampsia (PET) and intrauterine growth restriction (IGUR) were not significantly more frequent in subjects with APCR compared to normal pregnant women however Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) was found to be associated with FVL in our study group. Area: News
According to a report by NetDoctor, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has published an analysis of national data on the results of fertility treatment cycles, that is aimed at giving fertility patients an in depth look at the likely success of their treatment.
Patients can access information relevant to them: by age, whether it is in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) or (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) ICSI, fresh or frozen embryos, or using their own or donor eggs. The information then covers the patient pathway from the beginning of treatment right through to the outcome including: . of those who start treatment how many go on to have a baby . the likelihood of becoming pregnant with a singleton or multiples . what m...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

AAOS: Hip Implants Transmit Metal Ions During Pregnancy Levels of metal ions are elevated in children born to women who have undergone metal-on-metal hip

Transient mild elevation of serum TSH above the normal reference value for age is frequently observed in the first month of life in infants born from mother affected by autoimmune thyroiditis. Persistent hyperthyrotropinemia requiring replacement therapy is observed in 2.2% of these neonates. According to our experience, follow-up is recommended in these newborns; the most accurate and not invasive way to careful monitor these infants after neonatal screening for CH seems to be serum-testing TSH between 2 nd and 4 th week of life. These cytokines have been associated with spontaneous preterm birth (PTB) and their genetic regulation may play a role in disease risk. These associations were studied in both PTB and term births in African Americans and Caucasians; maternal and fetal genotypes were studied separately. Analyses modeled genotype, pregnancy status, and marker by pregnancy status (case/control) interaction with cytokine concentration as outcome. Our results indicate that AF cytokines (IL-1[beta] and IL-10) were associated with interactions between pregnancy status and both maternal and fetal SNPs, with the most ... Do maternal parenting practices predict problematic patterns of adolescent alcohol consumption? (Source: Addiction) Parity and breastfeeding are preventive measures against breast cancer in Iranian women. CONCLUSION: On the basis of breast anatomical and physiological changes during pregnancy, and parity and breastfeeding, full-term pregnancies and parities with efficient BF significantly reduced the risk of breast cancer compared with nonpregnant and nulliparous women or those who never breastfed. The number of children should ideally be limited to 1-3, and the cumulative duration of BF not less than 25-36 months. We would recommend 1-3 pregnancies and a BF duration not less than 18 months, with best results being achieved with 24 months per child.

This small study suggests that, compared to standard care, DRIFT reduces the risk of the combined outcome of death or severe disability in premature infants with enlargement of the ventricles in the brain due to bleeding. There are a number of points to note:
The study was relatively small, with 39 children in the DRIFT group and 38 in the standard care group. The trial was also stopped early due to safety concerns. The researchers note that these factors mean the results should therefore be interpreted cautiously.
While larger studies are preferable, the severity of the condition, its relatively uncommon nature and the difficulties associated with carrying out trials in infants mean that larger studies may not be feasible.
There were some differences between the groups... Diet in pregnancy and baby gender Conclusion
This study investigated how the mother?s diet in pregnancy might have an effect on the developing foetus. The researchers aimed to identify alterations in the activity of genes in the placenta that could potentially contribute to this effect. They found a number of changes in gene activity as a result of different maternal diets in mice, and that these changes were also affected by the gender of the foetus. However, differences between the species may mean that results obtained in mice may not be representative of what happens in humans.
This study did not aim to investigate whether maternal diet in pregnant mice affects the gender of their offspring.
The developing foetus obtains nutrition and oxygen, and also eliminates waste, via the placenta. Therefore changes in the place... That?s the message of a new study published this month.
Researchers in Finland followed around 500 children from age 8 to 13. Every year they did a blood test that measured their exposure to tobacco smoke in the previous few days. At age 13, they looked at the arteries of the children using ultrasound, to measure their thickness and health, and measured their levels of Apolipoprotein B, which gives a direct measure of the lipoproteins that can cause heart disease. They found that healthy 13-year-olds with exposure to tobacco smoke between 8 and 13 had thickening of the major arteries and higher levels of Apolipoprotein B. While the effects were worse in the kids with the highest exposure to ...

MedWorm Message: Get the very latest Swine Flu news via the MedWorm Swine Flu RSS news feed - updated hourly from thousands of authoritative health and news sources.

Researchers Find Exposure To BPA May Cause Permanent Fertility Defects Researchers at Yale School of Medicine have discovered that exposure during pregnancy to Bisphenol A (BPA), a common component of plastics, causes permanent abnormalities in the uterus of offspring, including alteration in their DNA.
