How Does Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center Keep Pregnancy Statistics?
Patients of Dr. Gary Berger and Dr. Charles Monteith want to know how they arrive at the Pregnancy Statistics which are posted on the website of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. Dr. Berger explains, "The Pregnancy Statistics are based on women who had their tubal reversal in order to become pregnant and does not include those who stated they would not try to conceive. Some women with PTLS were included if they also were going to try to conceive and some were excluded if they were not going to try to conceive." (Source: Tubal Ligation Reversal News)
Previous gestational diabetes impairs long-term endothelial function in a mouse model of complicated pregnancy
Women who develop gestational diabetes mellitis (GDM) display endothelial dysfunction up to 1 yr after pregnancy, despite a return to normoglycemia. It is unknown whether this dysfunction was preexisting or whether GDM pregnancy leads to long-term endothelial dysfunction. A mouse model that spontaneously develops GDM (Leprdb/+) was used to determine whether the endothelial dysfunction that develops during GDM is evident in later life. Heterozygous and wild-type (WT) controls were allowed to litter once, then age to 9&ndash;10 mo, and were compared with virgin controls. Vascular function of small mesenteric arteries was assessed using wire myography. Concentration response curves to the thromboxane A2mimetic U46619 and the endothelium-dependent vasodilator methacholine were constructed. Men Are More Open to Condoms Than Many Women Think
Almost 30 years ago, the AIDS epidemic made condoms a necessary part of sex in anything other than monogamous relationships. But traditional antipathy toward condoms never disappeared, and many people who want to use them don't follow through, often because they fear their partner might be put off by condoms. However, a new study shows that men are more open to condoms than many women believe.Australian researchers asked two questions of 1,144 college students, age 18 to 25: How willing are you to use condoms? And how willing do you think your lover is?Respondents were separated into two groups, those in monogamous relationships, and those who engaged in casual sex. Overall, in both groups, both men and women were more willing to use condoms than they thought their lovers were. The biggest...
Role of Prenatal Characteristics and Early Growth on Pubertal Attainment of British Girls
CONCLUSIONS: Many of the maternal prenatal characteristics and weight and BMI gain during infancy seemed to have similar influences across different puberty outcomes. Sexuality, Contraception, and the Media
From a health viewpoint, early sexual activity among US adolescents is a potential problem because of the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. New evidence points to the media adolescents use frequently (television, music, movies, magazines, and the Internet) as important factors in the initiation of sexual intercourse. There is a major disconnect between what mainstream media portray&mdash;casual sex and sexuality with no consequences&mdash;and what children and teenagers need&mdash;straightforward information about human sexuality and the need for contraception when having sex. Television, film, music, and the Internet are all becoming increasingly sexually explicit, yet information on abstinence, sexual responsibility, and birth control remains rare. It is unwise to pr...
s-SHIP promoter expression marks activated stem cells in developing mouse mammary tissue [Research Papers]
Mammary stem cells (MaSCs) play critical roles in normal development and perhaps tumorigenesis of the mammary gland. Using combined cell markers, adult MaSCs have been enriched in a basal cell population, but the exact identity of MaSCs remains unknown. We used the s-SHIP promoter to tag presumptive stem cells with GFP in the embryos of a transgenic mouse model. Here we show, in postnatal mammary gland development, that GFP+ cap cells in puberty and basal alveolar bud cells in pregnancy each exhibit self-renewal and regenerative capabilities for all mammary epithelial cells of a new functional mammary gland upon transplantation. Single GFP+ cells can regenerate the mammary epithelial network. GFP+ mammary epithelial cells are p63+, CD24mod, CD49fhigh, and CD29high; are actively proliferati...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Register for <b><a href="http://www.medmatcha.com" target ="_self">MedMatcha, MedWorm's medical advertising network</a></b>, and receive $5 free advertising.</p></div>

Levetiracetam use in pregnancy
If levetiracetam is used during pregnancy, women should receive adequate amounts of folic acid (0.4?5 mg/day) and serum concentrations of levetiracetam should be determined before conception if possible and during each trimester, especially during the middle of the third trimester, to assess therapeutic concentrations. The dose may need to be increased during the third trimester to provide concentrations consistent with those before conception. Patients should be informed that there appears to be a small chance of malformations with levetiracetam, but that the data are limited. Management issues for women with epilepsy - focus on pregnancy - an evidence-based review - vitamin K folic acid blood levels and breastfeeding
Recommendations: Supplementing women with epilepsy with at least 0.4 mg of folic acid before they become pregnant may be considered (Level C). Monitoring of lamotrigine, carbamazepine, and phenytoin levels during pregnancy should be considered (Level B) and monitoring of levetiracetam and oxcarbazepine (as monohydroxy derivative) levels may be considered (Level C). A paucity of evidence limited the strength of many recommendations. (Source: Neurological Conditions Specialist Library)
Management issues for women with epilepsy - focus on pregnancy - an evidence-based review - obstetrical complications and change in seizure frequency
Women with epilepsy (WWE) should be counseled that seizure freedom for at least 9 months prior to pregnancy is probably associated with a high rate (84%?92%) of remaining seizure-free during pregnancy (Level B). However, WWE who smoke should be counseled that they possibly have a substantially increased risk of premature contractions and premature labor and delivery during pregnancy (Level C). Management issues for women with epilepsy--focus on pregnancy - an evidence-based review - teratogenesis and perinatal outcomes
Recommendations: If possible, avoidance of valproate (VPA) and antiepileptic drug (AED) polytherapy during the first trimester of pregnancy should be considered to decrease the risk of major congenital malformations (Level B). If possible, avoidance of VPA and AED polytherapy throughout pregnancy should be considered to prevent reduced cognitive outcomes (Level B). If possible, avoidance of phenytoin and phenobarbital during pregnancy may be considered to prevent reduced cognitive outcomes (Level C). Pregnancy risk stratification should reflect that the offspring of women with epilepsy taking AEDs are probably at increased risk for being small for gestational age (Level B) and possibly at increased risk of 1-minute Apgar scores of (Source: Neurological Conditions Specialist Library)
Long-term developmental outcome of children of women with epilepsy unexposed or exposed prenatally to antiepileptic drugs -A meta-analysis of cohort
Conclusions: Although our analysis revealed no evidence that untreated maternal epilepsy was associated with a lower IQ in the child, there may have been confounding factors, such as milder epilepsy, in this group. Exposure to valproic acid in pregnancy is associated with significantly reduced intelligence in children whose mothers were treated for epilepsy. Exposure to carbamazepine in pregnancy does not appear to be associated with reduced FSIQ and VIQ in children, although PIQ was lower in the sub-analysis. Clinicians should inform families of the potential cognitive adverse effects of valproic acid. More studies are needed to corroborate these findings. Commission Versus Receipt of Violence During Pregnancy: Associations With Substance Abuse Variables
The tendency for women to report both commission and receipt of violence is an understudied phenomenon. In particular, little is known about individual differences as a function of commission vs. receipt of partner violence among pregnant women. Using a sample of 78 cohabiting low-SES pregnant women, the current study examines three violence subtypes based on self-report (primarily commission of violence, primarily receipt of violence, and no report of violence) and investigated differences in a range of other risk factors among these subtypes. In this sample, 47% reported higher levels of intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration than victimization; 14% reported more IPV victimization than perpetration; and 39% reported no IPV. Results demonstrate clear differences between women report...
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin in Pregnancy and Maternal Risk of Breast Cancer
Full-term pregnancies are associated with long-term reductions in maternal risk of breast cancer, but the biological determinants of the protection are unknown. Experimental observations suggest that human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a major hormone of pregnancy, could play a role in this association. A case-control study (242 cases and 450 controls) nested within the Northern Sweden Maternity Cohort included women who had donated a blood sample during the first trimester of a first full-term pregnancy. Total hCG was determined on Immulite 2000 analyzer. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated through conditional logistic regression. Maternal breast cancer risk decreased with increasing hCG (upper tertile OR, 0.67; CI, 0.46&ndash;0.99), especially for pregnancie...

Can I Use A Midwife After Tubal Ligation Reversal?
A message board member planning to have her tubal reversed at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center asks if she can use a midwife for her delivery after ligation reversal surgery. Another patient responds she is currently pregnant after her tubal reversal surgery and she has already talked with a midwife who is happy to take care of her delivery. Once a tubal reversal patient's pregnancy is confirmed to be in the uterus then the pregnancy can proceed normally without any additional concerns from the tube reversal surgery. The only exception to this would be patients who have had tubo-uterine implantation procedures to reverse their tubal blockage. These patients are sometimes advised to have a c-section at the time of delivery to prevent disruption of the tubo-uterine repair site. Pregnancy: A Screening Test for Later Life Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death in women. Heart disease presents special problems to women, as first events are more likely to be fatal. These observations have led to attempts to increase recognition of risk for the disease by care providers and women and to identify women at risk. In 2007, the American Heart Association updated their Evidence Based Guidelines for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Women (). In it, they presented guidelines for evaluating risk for cardiovascular disease in women. Interestingly, in the text, tables, and flow charts there is no mention of obtaining a pregnancy history. In the text there is mention: ?preeclampsia may be an early indicator of CVD risk.? In this presentation, we point out there is no doubt that preeclampsia is associat...

Quantitative methylation analysis of developmentally important genes in human pregnancy losses after ART and spontaneous conception
To study possible effects of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) on epigenetic reprogramming, we have analyzed the DNA methylation levels of differentially methylated regions (DMRs) of seven imprinted genes (H19, MEG3, LIT1, MEST, NESP55, PEG3 and SNRPN) as well as the promoter regions of the pluripotency gene NANOG and the tumor suppressor gene APC in chorionic villus samples (CVS) of 42 spontaneous miscarriages and stillbirths after ART and 29 abortions/stillbirths after spontaneous conception. We did not find an increased rate of faulty methylation patterns after ART, but significant and trend differences (ROC curve analysis, Wilcoxon test) in the methylation levels of LIT1 (P = 0.006) and H19 (P = 0.085) between ART and non-ART samples. With the possible exception of NANOG, we did...

Tips For Protecting Your Baby's Health In The Final Weeks Before Birth
Medical experts are concerned about the significant number of elective deliveries (C-sections and induced labor) that are being scheduled for non-medical reasons prior to 39 weeks of pregnancy. This troubling trend can lead to serious health consequences for the baby, as well as potential dangers for the mother. Many expectant mothers are not aware of the dangers of delivering too soon. Exposure to stress in the womb could be more harmful to males after birth than females, researchers have found. A study shows that when female mice are exposed to stressful situations early in pregnancy - such as being placed in unfamiliar surroundings, changing cages multiple times in a day, or smelling the odour of a predator - their male offspring are more sensitive to stress than females. This increased sensitivity to stress and behaviour and behaviour displayed may be similar to aspects of developmental brain disease in humans... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Ultrasonographically documented early pregnancy loss in an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).
Authors: Lueders I, Drews B, Niemuller C, Gray C, Rich P, Fickel J, Wibbelt G, Göritz F, Hildebrandt TB Early embryonic resorption or fetal loss is known to occur occasionally in captive elephants; however, this has mostly been reported anecdotally. The present study documents the case of a 24-year-old, multiparous Asian elephant cow that suffered embryonic death and resorption at around 18 weeks of gestation. From ovulation onwards, this female was sonographically examined 58 times. Blood was collected twice weekly for progestagen determination via enzyme immunoassay. On Day 42 after ovulation, a small quantity of fluid was detected in the uterine horn, which typically indicates the presence of a developing conceptus. Repeated inspections followed what appeared to be a normal pregn...

Services used by perinatal substance-users with child welfare involvement: a descriptive study
Conclusions: Findings from this study suggest services that address basic family needs were related to positive child welfare outcomes. The provision of basic services, such as health care and financial assistance through entitlement benefits and tangible donations, may help to establish a foundation so mothers can concentrate on recovery and parenting skills. Identification of services for perinatal substance users that are associated with more successful child welfare outcomes has implications for the child welfare system, treatment providers, courts and families. Achieving Pregnancy After Tubal Reversal Surgery
Many women who have had their tubes tied and now desire to have a baby find they are discouraged by doctors and family or believe it is not possible. KittyK shares these concerns on the Tubal Reversal Message Board and asks for information on becoming pregnant with tubes that have been cut, tied, and burned. Julia S., RN, a Tubal Reversal Nurse at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, responds with information on the chances of getting pregnant after tubal reversal with Dr. Gary Berger and Dr. Charles Monteith. Although age is the primary limiting factor - in almost all cases the fallopian tubes can be restored after they have been tied or burned. (Source: Tubal Ligation Reversal News)

Womb or Tomb
Abstract: Childbirth is almost always a wonderful and joyous experience. Parents often begin planning for their baby before they are pregnant. They develop their birth plan and look forward to holding their perfect baby. Sometimes this is just not what happens. Something may occur at conception or during the pregnancy, which causes their joy to shatter, and they experience the most dreadful grief. There are some occasions when problems arise during labor. Although an infrequent occurrence, it adds sorrow and anger to the situation. The case study presented here is that kind of happening. There were mistakes made in recognition of deterioration of the fetal well-being. This lack of recognition and treatment resulted in death of the long awaited baby who would have added joy and not grief to...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Register for <b><a href="http://www.medmatcha.com" target ="_self">MedMatcha, MedWorm's medical advertising network</a></b>, and receive $5 free advertising.</p></div>

Twin pregnancy
Abstract: Twins account for 2?3% of all births. They carry significant risks to both mothers and babies. These risks include preterm delivery, intrauterine growth restriction and pre-eclampsia. In addition, monochorionic gestations confer an even higher rate of perinatal morbidity and mortality arising from a shared placenta due to placental anastamoses, which may lead to twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). It is essential that chorionicity is established in the first trimester in order to initiate the appropriate antenatal management and surveillance. In view of the high risk of both maternal and fetal complications, twin pregnancies are ideally managed in a dedicated clinic according to agreed protocols. Thyroid and other endocrine disorders in pregnancy
Abstract: Endocrine disorders are increasingly encountered in pregnancy. To optimize pregnancy outcome, it is essential to understand the physiology underlying these conditions, as well as which investigations and treatments are safe to use. Thyroid disease is the second most common endocrine condition encountered in women of childbearing age after diabetes. Other endocrine disorders, such as pituitary dysfunction and adrenal and parathyroid disease, are less frequently encountered in pregnancy due to lower population prevalence in combination in some cases with associated subfertility. Women whose pregnancies are complicated by endocrine disease are at risk of maternal and foetal complications, but these can be minimized with appropriate multidisciplinary management. Substance misuse in pregnancy
Abstract: Substance misuse is a common problem complicating pregnancy and childbirth. Multidisciplinary care is necessary to optimize outcomes because the financial, psychological, social and domestic problems associated with drug misuse are often of greater importance than the physical and medical concerns. A specialist midwife is ideally placed to coordinate the involvement of acute hospital trusts, community midwives, general practitioners, mental health and drug services, social services and sometimes the police. The aim during pregnancy is to engage the client with these multiple agencies, to help bring a degree of order, and to reduce the harm associated with substance misuse. Abstinence and detoxification are not necessarily the priority. This review illustrates the general princip...

Relationships Between Cell-Free DNA and Serum Analytes in the First and Second Trimesters of Pregnancy.
CONCLUSION:: Correlation between serum pregnancy-associated plasma protein A and first-trimester circulating cell-free fetal and total DNA levels is a novel finding. Pregnancy-associated plasma protein A is a glycoprotein of placental origin, and its correlation to cell-free fetal DNA in maternal serum suggests a common tissue origin through apoptosis of placental cells. However, because pregnancy-associated plasma protein A and cell-free DNA were only marginally correlated and cell-free DNA can be reliably detected in the first trimester, the addition of cell-free DNA to serum screening strategies may be helpful in predicting adverse pregnancy outcome. Malaria, Danger, and Risk Perceptions among the Yao in Rural Malawi

Using extended ethnographic field research and multiple methods, we argue a shift from narrow single?disease approaches to malaria during pregnancy is required and document women's concerns about exposure to multiple vulnerabilities during pregnancy, including witchcraft, extramarital affairs, and multiple dangerous illnesses. Four dimensions are implicated in Yao perceptions of risk: perceived adverse consequences in pregnancy; ease of treatment and cure; transmission and agency to control; and type of risk (social?medical). We discuss implications and consider malaria program features ...
Perils to Pregnancies:
This article explores the local perceptions and practices surrounding pregnancy loss in Cameroon?a topic that has long been neglected in international reproductive health debates. Based on extended periods of anthropological fieldwork in an urban and a rural setting in the East province of the country, it shows the inherent ambiguities that underlie pregnancies and their perceived dangers. By situating meanings of pregnancy loss within the complex dynamics of marriage and kinship, pregnant bodies are argued to be social bodies?the actions and interpretations of which shift along with social situations. This approach not only forms an alternative to the current focus on the body politic in global discourses on fertility risks but also shows how conventional assumptions such as the rigid...

Lower Extremity Changes Experienced During Pregnancy
Abstract: The anatomic and physiologic changes occurring with pregnancy result in a variety of symptoms affecting the lower extremity. The purpose of this investigation is to provide a comprehensive look at the lower extremity changes experienced during pregnancy and correlate symptoms with underlying etiology in a literature review. In this retrospective study, 100 postpartum women were interviewed regarding the lower extremity changes experienced in pregnancy. The interview included dermatologic, vascular, neurologic, and musculoskeletal portions. Results demonstrate more than 50% of women reported faster toenail growth, roughened toenail texture, increased dryness of the skin, swelling of the foot, ankle, and leg, unsteady gait, increased foot width, and hip pain. Though a majority of p...
?Informed and uninformed decision making??Women's reasoning, experiences and perceptions with regard to advanced maternal age and delayed childbearing: A meta-synthesis
Conclusions: Health professionals need to be mindful of the fact that women delay childbearing for various reasons. A strategy of pre-conception education may be beneficial in informing childbearing decisions. Obstetricians and midwives should be sensitive to the fact that women may not be aware of all the risks associated with delayed childbearing. (Source: International Journal of Nursing Studies)

Adiana Sterilization Reversal Is Successful
Adiana tubal sterilization is not permanent and can be reversed. The Adiana procedure is a newer form of sterilization and is very similar to the Essure procedure. Adiana closes the tubes in the narrowest portion of the tubes as they travel through the uterine muscle. The Adiana was approved by the FDA in July of 2009, but prior to FDA approval Adiana was being tested in clinical trials. One of the first patients to undergo this new sterilization procedure came to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center for reversal of her Adiana. She underwent a successful bilateral tubouterine implantation. A pregnancy soon followed and now the tubal reversal experts of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center are pleased to announce the successful arrival of baby Dylan...the first-ever Adiana reversal baby! Getting Started With Reversing Tubal Ligation
One of the most frequently asked questions about having tubal reversal surgery is, "How do I get started?". A member of the Tubal Reversal Message Board shares her story and the steps she is planning to take to prepare for having her tubes untied at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. Dr. Gary Berger and Dr. Charles Monteith have a Tubal Reversal Website dedicated to providing information for patients interested in reversing tied tubes. Web pages with information on preparing for tubal reversal and getting started with scheduling the reverse tubal ligation help women prepare for surgery. This information is one of the reasons patients travel from all over the world to have their reversal surgery performed with Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith. Other reasons include exceptional patient care, comp...
First-Ever Baby Born Following Adiana Reversal
After undergoing reversal of her Adiana procedure with Dr. Gary Berger and Dr. Charles Monteith in 2009, a member of the Tubal Reversal Message Board announces the first ever reported birth after reversal of an Adiana procedure. This is both the first-ever reported successful Adiana reversal and baby born after Adiana reversal. Adiana is a new sterilization technique very similar to the Essure procedure. At Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, experience demonstrates pregnancy can happen after Essure, Adiana, or traditional tubal ligation. The Tubal Reversal Doctors have extensive skill in reversal of tubal ligation procedures and also with the more complicated surgical reversals required for both Adiana and Essure sterilization. A prospective cohort study of biomarkers of prenatal tobacco smoke exposure: the correlation between serum and meconium and their association with infant birth weight
Conclusions: Meconium is a useful biological matrix for measuring prenatal tobacco smoke exposure and could be used in epidemiological studies that enroll women and infants at birth. Meconium holds promise as a biological matrix for measuring the intensity and duration of environmental toxicant exposure and future studies should validate the utility of meconium using other environmental toxicants. [Seminar] Gestational trophoblastic disease
Gestational trophoblastic disease encompasses a range of pregnancy-related disorders, consisting of the premalignant disorders of complete and partial hydatidiform mole, and the malignant disorders of invasive mole, choriocarcinoma, and the rare placental-site trophoblastic tumour. These malignant forms are termed gestational trophoblastic tumours or neoplasia. Improvements in management and follow-up protocols mean that overall cure rates can exceed 98% with fertility retention, whereas most women would have died from malignant disease 60 years ago. This success can be explained by the development of effective treatments, the use of human chorionic gonadotropin as a biomarker, and centralisation of care. We summarise strategies for management of gestational trophoblastic disease and addre...

Blockade of Endothelin-1 with a Novel Series of 1,3,6-Trisubstituted-2-Carboxy-Quinol-4-Ones Controls Infection-Associated Preterm Birth.
Authors: Olgun NS, Patel HJ, Stephani R, Lengyel I, Reznik SE Preterm birth (PTB) currently accounts for 13% of all births in the United States, with the leading cause of PTB being maternal infection. Endothelin-1, an extremely potent vasoconstrictor capable of increasing myometrial smooth muscle tone, has been shown to be up-regulated in the setting of infection in pregnancy, ultimately leading to PTB. In previous work, we have shown that infection-associated PTB is controlled in our murine model by using phospharamidon, an endothelin-converting enzyme-1 inhibitor; knocking down endothelin-converting enzyme-1 mRNA; or blocking the binding of endothelin-1 to the endothelin-A (ETA) receptor with either BQ-123 or with HJP-272, the 6-OH compound of our series of novel synthetic (ETA) rece...
Trophoblast- and Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell-Derived MMP-12 Mediates Elastolysis during Uterine Spiral Artery Remodeling.
In this study, we sought to identify the elastolytic proteases involved in this process. Primary first-trimester cytotrophoblasts (CTBs) derived from the placenta exhibited intracellular and membrane-associated elastase activity; membrane-associated activity was primarily attributable to matrix metalloproteinases (MMP). Indeed, Affymetrix microarray analysis and immunocytochemistry implicated MMP-12 (macrophage metalloelastase) as a key mediator of elastolysis. Cultured human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs) exhibited constitutive membrane-associated elastase activity and inducible intracellular elastase activity; these cells also expressed MMP-12 protein. Moreover, a specific inhibitor of MMP-12 significantly reduced CTB- and HASMC-mediated elastolysis in vitro, to 31.7 +/- 10.9% and 2...

During pregnancy, recreational drug-using women stop taking ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine) and reduce alcohol consumption, but continue to smoke tobacco and cannabis: initial findings from the Development and Infancy Study
While recreational drug use in UK women is prevalent, to date there is little prospective data on patterns of drug use in recreational drug-using women immediately before and during pregnancy. A total of 121 participants from a wide range of backgrounds were recruited to take part in the longitudinal Development and Infancy Study (DAISY) study of prenatal drug use and outcomes. Eighty-six of the women were interviewed prospectively while pregnant and/or soon after their infant was born. Participants reported on use immediately before and during pregnancy and on use over their lifetime. Levels of lifetime drug use of the women recruited were high, with women reporting having used at least four different illegal drugs over their lifetime. Most users of cocaine, 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamp...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Message:</i></b> Register for <b><a href="http://www.medmatcha.com" target ="_self">MedMatcha, MedWorm's medical advertising network</a></b>, and receive $5 free advertising.</p></div>

BJOG Release: The Use Of Epidurals May Help Prevent Future Pelvic Organ Prolapse
A new study to be published in BJOG: The British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology shows how the use of epidurals during birth may have a protective effect on the levator ani muscles, which hold up the pelvic floor. The levator ani muscle is found in the pelvis attached to its sidewalls and forming a platform holding up the internal organs; in women this includes the uterus. Tearing of this muscle (levator avulsion) during childbirth has been found in 15-35% of women who have given birth vaginally, and has been shown to be a strong risk factor for pelvic organ prolapse (POP)... Identification of clinically significant, submicroscopic chromosome alterations and UPD in fetuses with ultrasound anomalies using genome-wide 250k SNP array analysis
Conclusion In at least 16% of fetuses with ultrasound anomalies and a normal or balanced karyotype, causal (submicroscopic) aberrations were detected, illustrating the importance of the (careful) implementation of microarray analysis in prenatal diagnosis. The fact that the identified, clinically relevant, aberrations would have gone undetected with most targeted approaches underscores the added value of a genome-wide approach. Sad mothers have small babies, rural Bangladesh study finds
Clinical depression and anxiety during pregnancy results in smaller babies that are more likely to die in infancy, according to new research. The study, which focused on women living in rural Bangladesh, provides the first finding of its kind in a non-Western population. The research indicates that mental health issues are likely to be a primary contributor to infant mortality and poor child health, above poverty, malnutrition or low socio-economic status. Evidence for male allocation in pipefish?
Authors: Darryl T. Gwynne, Kevin A. Judge & Clint D. Kelly Arising from: K. A. Paczolt & A. G. Jones Nature464, 401&#8211;404 (2010); Paczolt & Jones replySexual differences in the extent and type of parental care lie at the heart of sexual selection theory, and evolution resulting from parental conflict has produced some striking behavioural and morphological adaptations. In a study of male pregnancy in Gulf pipefish, Paczolt and Jones showed that more eggs were transferred to the male&#8217;s brood pouch and more offspring survived following mating with large females (preferred by males) than with small (less preferred) females. Although the authors conclude that the lower survival of embryos from small females is most consistent with males actively removing resources from th...
